Research in India is limited on the subject of violence against children, though it is prevalent & widespread. In 2007, the Ministry of Women and Child Development released a study on Child Abuse in the country. The key findings reflected that 2 out of 3 children report facing physical abuse.
A Plan India study on the impact of corporal punishment confirmed that corporal punishment was a regular feature in the lives of most children in schools. Children reported nearly 33 different types of punishments. The more severe of these include children being severely kicked, starved, tied with ropes to chairs / poles followed by beating and being assigned physically strenuous labour.
School Contact programme
The school contact programme by Plan India was designed to highlight the negative impact of violence on children and the importance of treating with dignity and respect in schools. The campaign was primarily focusing on the government schools.
The school contact program started in 2009 and so far has reached to 200 government schools in three states, Delhi, Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh. As part of the School Contact Programme, students were asked to give feedback on their experiences that they or their friends have faced in school.
We will share the feedback shared by these students as part of our “Fact of the Day” series.
